Overview:
Known as the "River of No Return", the Main Salmon River has lost its reputation for not being able to be explored by Clark from the Lewis and Clark expeditions and the local natives. The river was first attempted in March of 1832 with no success. With the discovery of gold in the 1860's came prospectors and other hardy settlers. Finally, by 1872 the river was run regularly by woodsmen who made a living transporting passengers and goods along the river.
Today we are able to visit the remnants of these adventurous dreamers. Along with these forgotten homesteads of prospectors and river hermits, there are ancient rock paintings created by the ancestors of the Shoshone and Nez Perce. Other stops include luxurious sandy beaches where we make camp. These beaches and temperate waters make the Main Salmon an ideal trip for families. As you raft down the river absorb the pristine wilderness surrounding you.
Observe the steady change of scenery with every mile you travel downstream beginning with rugged alpine mountains, moving steadily into enchanting pine forests interrupted by solemn granite gorges that eventually open to high desert meandering slopes.
| The river season for the Main Salmon begins in April and ends in October. Winter runoff peaks in late May and June. During these months the runoff can make the rapids monstrous, because of this the age minimums vary upon the amount of water flow. When the water flow is high the age minimum is 12 years and during times of low flow the age minimum is 5 years. Trip length ranges between 5-7 days, putting in at Corn Creek and getting out at Carey Creek you will run about 82 miles of river. The river is rated Class III. These trips start in Boise or Salmon, Idaho. |
